Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Marion Cotillard have joined The Dark Knight Rises, Warner Bros. announced Tuesday — but not as the characters you may think.
Gordon-Levitt, who was widely reported to be playing Alberto Falcone (aka the Holiday Killer and son of Carmine Falcone), will play John Blake, a Gotham City beat cop assigned to special duty under Commissioner Gordon (Gary Oldman).
Cotillard will play Miranda Tate, a Wayne Enterprises board member eager to help a still-grieving Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) resume his father's philanthropic endeavors in the city. The Oscar winner, who is due with her first child this spring, was previously rumored to be playing Talia al Ghul, daughter of Ra's al Ghul.
The film reunites Gordon-Levitt and Cotillard with their Inception director Christopher Nolan, as well as Inception co-stars Tom Hardy, who will play Bane, and Michael Caine, who will return as Alfred. Anne Hathaway also will star as Selina Kyle, the alter ego of Catwoman.
"When you collaborate with people as talented as Marion and Joe, it comes as no surprise that you would want to repeat the experience," Nolan said in a statement. "I immediately thought of them for the roles of Miranda and Blake, and I am looking forward to working with both of them again."
The Dark Knight Rises starts production next month and is scheduled to hit theaters July 20, 2012.
